Game diary – rodeo
Frantic sessions of GTA IV & nothing much else, over the past week. I haven’t looked at either the multiplayer options or the Lost & Damned DLC for GTAIV & these aren’t high on my list of things to try, just now.
This week has also seen 2 new titles added to my videogame collection – Killzone 2 arrived unexpectedly from Sony & it will be the first title I have played on the PS3 for months. Not only that but I also feel I’ve found a nice surprise package in picking up the 2007 released videogame, The Darkness. This was after receiving a copy of The Darkness comic book title from Comics Domain a few weeks back which got me caught up in the intense storyline, a blend of Mafia/crime story & horror.

As The Darkness comic book has been around since 1996, I have some catching up to do which will mean I’ll be adding The Darkness Ultimate Collection to my goodreads list. This collection combines the first 6 issues of volumes 1 & 2 with issue 40 of volume 1 & these story arcs are the basis upon which The Darkness videogame is set.
Expect some coverage of both games via the game diary in the weeks to come.

The Darkness comic book maybe good, but the game is not. I suffered playing through that game twice so I could get all the single player achievement points, don’t want to do that again.

What didn’t you like about the game? Storyline? Gameplay?
I had been led to believe that the game was underrated at the time of release & that the storyline in singleplayer was well done. Multiplayer was noted as weak but that doesn’t really concern me.

The story in the comics might be great, but the way it’s told in the game is very weak. You receive the darkness powers about 10 mins into the game, and for no apparent reason. There is also some animosity between Jackie and his uncle that is never explained well either. And it seems that purgatory is just a recreation of WWI where disfigured British soldiers fight against Nazi demons, none of it made any sense what so ever.
The gameplay wasn’t terrible, but was frustrating. Auto-aim was worthless, the darkness powers were clumsy to use, and controlling your minions was a pain.
And for all this talk about how the game looked great, I just didn’t see it. Character models looked great, but the environments were bland, and overall the game looked like an HD version of the Chronicles of Riddick, another game that I thought was overrated.
You may enjoy the game, but I thought it was not as good as others felt it was.

Food for thought, thanks JayeDuB! The Darkness is still unwrapped, as I’m still in full flow in GTA IV.

Never completed a GTA game before & just checked my progress in GTA IV – am a 3rd of the way through the main missions & have just started picking out the random character missions. Looking forward to the assassination side missions, love playing a sniper in videogaming – no that doesn’t mean I camp!
